If you have found your way here, you probably want to know who we are before you let us anywhere near your roof or your fuse board. Fair enough. So let me introduce the company properly.
My name is Jason Pope and I own Selec Group. We are a renewables company based in Cambridgeshire. We fit solar panels, battery storage and air conditioning, and we do electrical work, which is where the whole thing started. In this post I will explain what we do, how we got here, and the standards we hold ourselves to.
The three arms of the business
The business has grown into three connected parts. They sit together naturally, because they are all about how a home uses and makes energy.
- Solar and battery. This is our main focus at the moment. We design and fit solar PV systems and battery storage that let you generate your own electricity, store it, and use far more of it yourself instead of buying it from the grid.
- Air conditioning. We fit air to air heat pumps, mostly as an efficient heating system rather than just for cooling in summer. These are among the most efficient ways to heat a home.
- Electrical work. This is our heritage, and it underpins everything else. Good solar and good air conditioning both rely on sound electrical work behind them.
We started as electricians
We did not begin as a renewables company. We came up through electrical work, and that matters more than it sounds.
Solar, batteries and air conditioning all connect into your home’s electrics. When the people fitting them are electricians first, the wiring side is done properly, not bolted on as an afterthought. The trade we cut our teeth on is the foundation under every renewable system we install.
Air conditioning as a heating replacement
A lot of people still think of air conditioning as something for cooling on hot days. It does that, but the bigger story is heating.
A modern air to air heat pump pulls warmth from the outside air and moves it indoors. It is far more efficient than burning oil or gas, because it moves heat rather than creating it from scratch. For every unit of electricity it uses, it delivers several units of heat.
We have replaced many oil heating systems with air conditioning. For homes off the mains gas grid, paying for oil deliveries, the running cost difference can be substantial. Pair it with solar and a battery and you start heating your home on power you have largely made yourself.
A small, local, mostly employed team
We are deliberately small, and we keep the work in house. Our team is mostly employed, not a rotating cast of subcontractors. The only contractor we bring in is the scaffolder, because scaffolding is a specialist job in its own right.
That matters for you. The people who survey your home are part of the same team who fit the system and who you will speak to afterwards. The office is run by Vicki, and when you ring, she answers the phone. You get a person, not a call centre.
Our patch is Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire and Northamptonshire. We work around Huntingdon, St Ives, St Neots, Buckden, Brampton, Grafham, Spaldwick, Alconbury, Ellington and Easton, and the villages in between. Being local is part of the point. We are not far away if you need us.
Done properly, and the accreditations that back it up
Our ethos is simple. Do the job properly. That is easy to say, so here is what stands behind it.
- MCS certified. The Microgeneration Certification Scheme is the quality standard for solar and renewable installs in the UK. It is also what you need to claim the Smart Export Guarantee, which pays you for the electricity you export.
- NAPIT registered. This covers our electrical competence and lets us self certify electrical work.
- TrustMark registered. This is the government endorsed quality scheme for tradespeople working in and around the home.
- RECC accredited. The Renewable Energy Consumer Code sets the standard for how a renewables company treats its customers, from quote to aftercare.
These are not badges we collect for a website. They mean our work is checked against real standards, your paperwork is in order, and you have proper consumer protection behind your installation.
Built to last beyond me
When I specify a system, I am thinking decades ahead. I want the kit we fit to be working long after I have retired. That shapes the products we choose. We only fit systems with good quality, good support and genuine longevity, because a renewable system that fails in ten years has not done its job.
We would rather turn down a cheap product we do not trust than fit something that lets a customer down later.
What to expect when you get in touch
There is no pressure and no scripted sales pitch. We come and look at your property, talk through what you want to achieve, and put together a quote that is bespoke to your home and how you use energy. If solar is not right for your roof, we will tell you. If a smaller system makes more sense than a big one, we will say so. The aim is to give you the information to make a good decision, then to do the work properly and look after you afterwards.
The bottom line
Selec Group is a small, local renewables company built on an electrical trade background. We fit solar, battery storage, air conditioning and carry out electrical work to a standard backed by MCS, NAPIT, TrustMark and RECC, with a mostly employed team and a real person on the phone.
If you are weighing up solar, a battery, or swapping oil heating for air conditioning anywhere across Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire or Northamptonshire, call the office on 01480 400607 or request a survey through our website.
