Electrical, Solar and Air conditioning: done properly.

Your electric car is likely your second most valuable asset after your home. A charge point fitted badly, with poor cable routing, incorrect earthing or the wrong protective devices, is a safety risk and may void your car warranty. EV charge points should always be installed by a qualified electrician, to the correct standard. That is not always what you get when you book through a manufacturer’s network or a third-party installation service.

At Selec Group, all EV charge point installations are carried out directly by our own electrician. We do not subcontract. You get the same quality, care and aftercare on every job, backed by our 6-year insurance-backed guarantee.

Chargers we install

We install a range of home charge points to suit different needs and budgets:

  • Zappi. The most popular choice for homes with solar panels. The Zappi can prioritise charging from your solar generation, so instead of exporting surplus electricity to the grid, you put it into your car. It also has a boost mode for when you need to charge quickly from the grid.
  • Hypervolt. A well-built, reliable unit with a clean, compact design. Good app integration and OCPP compatibility for those who want flexibility over their setup.

If you are not sure which charger is right for you, we will talk you through the options based on your car, your home setup and whether you have solar panels. There is no pressure to choose the most expensive option.

Solar and smart tariff integration

If you have solar panels, or are planning to install them, pairing them with a smart charger like the Zappi is one of the most cost-effective combinations available. Your car charges from your own generated electricity rather than from the grid, which can bring the effective cost of charging close to zero during summer months.

We also set up chargers to work with smart tariffs such as Octopus Intelligent Go. These tariffs offer significantly cheaper overnight electricity rates, and a smart charger can be scheduled to charge automatically during those windows. Over a year, the savings are substantial.

Because we install both solar systems and EV chargers, we can design the two to work together from the outset, rather than retrofitting a charger onto a solar setup that was not designed with it in mind.

What is a standard installation?

A standard installation covers a straightforward setup where the following conditions apply:

  • A maximum cable run of 10 metres from the charge point to the consumer unit.
  • All cables clipped direct (no conduit, trunking or underground runs).
  • No groundwork required.
  • The property’s earthing arrangement complies with current regulations.
  • The charger is installed on the property and can use its earthing arrangement.
  • The existing consumer unit has a spare 32A breaker position and can accommodate an A-type RCBO or RCD.

If your property does not meet these criteria, it is a non-standard installation. Unlike some companies, we are happy to survey and quote for non-standard work, it is often more straightforward than it sounds. Just call us and we will take a look.

What to expect on the day

Most standard EV charger installations take around two to three hours. We will confirm the cable route with you before we start, keep disruption to a minimum, and tidy up on completion. You receive an Electrical Installation Certificate on the day, which is your proof of compliant installation. If your charger requires DNO notification, we handle that as part of the job.

Why it matters who fits your charger

The EV charger market has grown quickly, and with it the number of fitters who are neither fully qualified nor registered. A charge point is a dedicated 32A circuit connected directly to your consumer unit. If the protective devices are wrong, the earthing is inadequate, or the cable is underrated for the installation conditions, you have a problem that may not be obvious until something goes wrong.

As NAPIT-registered electricians, all our EV charger installations are certified under Part P of the Building Regulations. You receive a Minor Works Certificate or Electrical Installation Certificate, which is recorded with NAPIT. That documentation matters when you sell the property.
